Keep It Light Trip

Our Keep It Light group recently took a trip as a collective to Mt. Ranier. We had an amazing time at the coolest little cabin and exploring in the woods. Shooting/bonding/eating and all that crap. Ghost Hunting 101

Nothing to get you in the mood for Halloween than a good old fashioned ghost hunting expedition. I was assigned to join a group of Northwest Ghost Hunters over night aboard a retired Vietnam era Destroyer ship now stationed in Bremerton. It was one of the most fun/bizarre photo jobs Ive had and I love how the article came out to accompany them. Check it out in the October issue of Seattle Metropolitan.

Wallpaper* Magazine November 2010

Excited to have two portraits in the new November issue of Wallpaper*. Two really fun shoots including another excuse to travel to Portland.

I documented the build of Seattle Artist/Designer Roy McMakin's handmade wooden floor project. The printed portrait shows Roy and the final product but a special online gallery will be live soon on Wallpaper.com showing some of the process shots.

Portland's shoot was of the little americana inspired bar "The Fixin-To". Owners Bart Blasengame and his wife Marli were really rad people. Even made me one of those signature cocktails their drinking after the shoot.

Javas & Gordini

Several years ago I had the chance to see an apartment in capitol hill that I would never forget. I met a random kid outside the Ben Lomand building smoking cigarettes who happened to be subletting it from the owner; Gordon Brown (better known as Gordini by friends). It was a four bedroom apartment filled with his art work as well as rare relics of the past from all over the world. Each room having a specific theme and color palette. I always wanted to do a photo shoot there but never thought id have the chance. Years later, I have become good friends with Javas Lehn who ended up being Gordini's godson. He invited us to spend some time in the apartment with him and told us more about his late godfathers amazing life.

Gordon served in World War 2 as a Navy officer. Later in life he went on to doing interior design for the Frederick and Nelson department store. He eventually decided to devote his life to art/writing/travel and spent the last forty years of his life doing this. Last night Javas had one final get together with our friends at Gordons apartment before he moves to NYC. I planned a portrait for him of all of us inside my favorite room of the apartment. The White Room. Im extremely happy to get to have this memory of Gordon's place and good friends. I love creative couples. Its definitly a topic that has been explored before but it never ceases to make me happy. Watching people not only be in a romantic relationship but to inspire eachother to create in their own fields. My recent shoot of the Rowena Sartin F/W 2010 Line allowed me to meet the designer Kristin Dickson & her husband Shin Okuda. Shin is a designer/prop stylist. Together, they own the LA botique IKO IKO. This was a quick portrait of them after our shoot but I love the simplicity and that it incorporates both their work inside their store.

This portrait is of my good friend Levi Mandel. Levi moved to NYC a few years back and its been great keeping in touch and both seeing eachother progressing as photographers. I took this same image on my last trip to NYC but the film somehow was exposed and i lost the entire roll. I re-did as best possible this week while he was in Seattle. He recently had the amazing oppurtunity to shoot one of my biggest inspirations: Ryan McGinley.

Here is that photo and several others of his I particuarily love. Levi has a style that is truly his own. Capturing moments and life in a way that is hard to do. Finding magic in some of the strangest things & shooting almost entirely on 35mm film.

Had the honor of working with Wallpaper* magazine again for their new September issue. Shooting 2 of the Judges (Stephen Susman & John Barratt) for their annual Best Business Hotels Feature. I am really happy with both images, especially the shot of Stephen Susman (Top Left). Making an older texan laywer look "hip" was a bit of a challenge but I ended up loving his portrait most. Had a chance to photograph Spencer Moody of The Murder City Devils/Triumph of Lethargy on his last day of running his store The Anne Bonny. After 3.5 years he has decided to move on with other interests. Hopefully more music! I'm glad he still had the 9 foot cross in tact on the day we shot. Stranger Cover/Approaching a Portrait

Very excited to receive this week's Stranger Cover with my film portrait of Stan Rumbaugh. I'm really happy with the results & wanted to reflect on the assignment a bit on my blog. I think most photographers agree you never want to attempt "the same" shot twice; nor can you. My portrait of now Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn during last years election time worked out really well. It was the right combination of photo/pose/personality. When asked to do something similar last week for Stan I immediately got a bit worried. Obviously he is different than Mike and I didn't want the shots to look exactly the same with editing, although the crop would also be a head shot. In the end I'm glad I tried something a bit different and I think it worked to show Stan as a positive approachable guy. Not just a cheesy Politician's head shot. Vote Rumbaugh!

Had the pleasure of being shot by Seattle Photographer Dan Carillo. Dan has been working on a series of Northwest Artist Portraits shot using his 11x14 DearDorf View Camera. The camera has been modified to shoot 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion Ambrotypes which is what you see above. Truly an honor to be part of the series and even cooler to watch the process in action. I really respect the amount of time and patience these portraits require from both Dan and the subjects (Some exposures requiring stillness for 5-10 seconds). Honored to have had my first job with Wallpaper* Magazine. Documenting the paint process of their Kinfolk Track Frame for the new August Handmade Issue. Traveled down to COAT paint in Portland, OR for the shoot. Eric & The guys at COAT were super cool and amazingly talented. Im a bit jealous I didn't get to shoot the final product shot of the built bike in the UK which turned out AMAZING in the spread. Definitely go pick up a copy this month!

I finally decided on a print that i felt would do the frame justice. This was that shot. Too an enjoyable art gallery tour via bicycle yesterday with the homie jay aka FanKult. Who has a show of his own up right now. I was extremely impressed by his work as well as 2 other Seattle young artists who are recieving national exposure. Make time to swing by the following galleries during July.

1. Lawrimore Project Presents: Isaac Layman 110%
This local photographer has created some stunning large photo prints of everyday objects that look hardly ordinary in these photos. Through layering multiple scans of 4x5's Isaac has created one of the coolest shows I've seen in awhile. Really draws you in and makes you see much more than you ever did from things like Otter Pops, Hot Dog Package, or my favorite; a Door Knob/Keyhole titled Basement. Lawrimore project is one of, if not the nicest art spaces in town. Couldn't imagine a better home for this show

2. Greg Kucera Gallery Presents: Walleyed by: Tennis Whiting.
I'm a little behind on this one as it isnt the galleries primary focus during July. However many of the pieces are still on display including my two favorites including Mastadon & Pegboard Painting. Some of the most original and beautiful paintings, sculptures, and drawings ive seen in awhile. See it in person while you can.

3. Pun(c)tuation Gallery presents FANKULT's Cry Me A River...And Go Drown In It
Jay's Collage work really came together for this show. I think its some of the most honest, edgy, response drawing art being made in Seattle. From a man who knows his stuff inside and out. His piece titles & attention (or lack of attention) to the details makes it stand out.

Assisting Autumn de Wilde

Had the opportunity to assist one of my biggest inspirations over the years, Autumn de Wilde. I initially found her work via the Elliot Smith photos she became so well known for. Since then she has shot many of Music's best (Beck, Wilco, Spoon, Jack White, Miranda July, etc..). She works exclusively with film; primarily on her Hasselblad. The above photo was a Polaroid test of me from the day we worked with The Decemberists out on a small farm near Portland, OR. The shoot was a long one but fun. Of anything I took from assisting, I was most excited to watch her interaction with the band. It takes a truly special photographer to keep a band excited, happy, and willing to shoot a 10-12 hour portrait session. She is patient and willing to wait for the shot she knows she wants. I look forward to seeing the final photos. Till then enjoy a few of my favorite Autumn de Wilde images from over the years.

Sleepy Eyes Of Death-Data Grave

After shooting Sleepy Eyes of Death several times, I approached them about possibly doing a music video. Over the past few months, Patrick Wright & I have been working on the project. We chose the song Data Grave off of their new album. I took more of a production roll on the video, focusing on finding locations, props, actors, etc. Patrick manned the 7D and did the edit. We need to give a HUGE thanks to all of our friends who helped out so much. Especially Frank who as you can see from the video was truly the star of the show. Enjoy!

I try not to put too much personal life stuff on here but I cant help but share my happiness today. This weekend was officially 1 year being with my Katie. I cannot express how much having her in my life has made me happy, motivated, succesful and just excited for life in general. She has helped me realize photography really is what I want to do for my career and has pushed/supported me through the full-time transition. I love her passion, humor, and ideas. I cannot wait to see what adventures will come our way this coming year.

Sasquatch Festival 2010: Film Portraits

Last year I brought a Rolleiflex to Sasquatch for a portrait series during the weekend. I loved the results so kept the tradition going this year. The following are portraits of Artists (Chuck D, Yacht, Neon Indian, Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos, Yoni & Yosiah Wolf of WHY?, Green Man, Ryan McMackin, Kaylee Cole. Singer of Passion Pit and friends (April, Chona) I met or ran into over the 3 day weekend at the Gorge. Shot on my Hasselblad 500c.

Sasquatch Festival 2010. Monday:

The final day of Sasquatch was a great way to close it out. Whether you were sad, alone, and broke at the end of it like the kid pictured above or just enjoying the simple things like rolling down a big grass hill (Pictured below) It was the end of an amazing weekend. Monday's musical highlights were my local favoritess Past Lives as well as the soul brother Mayer Hawthorne. Seattle's Rock Orchestra performed one of my all-time favorite albums (Arcade Fire-Funeral) and had the crowd singing allong and watching in awe. Lastly, how could i forget the lovely Zooey Dechanell singing as half of She & Him. WEEN closed it out and although I'm not much of a fan they definitely had a fun light show and energetic performance.

Sasquatch Festival 2010. Sunday:

Sunday was probably the best day of the festival musically for me. LCD Soundsystem was really fun to hear as well as the much anticipated Pavement Reunion show. Public Enemy spit classic knowledge and closing it out with Massive Attack; who took it to a whole new level with their show. Enjoy these fav's from the shots I took that day.

Well, my 4th year of shooting the Sasquatch Music Festival is complete. This year was truly an amazing experience shooting for Live Nation (Who puts on the festival) and I think the photos will reflect that. As always it was a lot of hustling all over the place catching show after show after show. Bumping into friends allong the way and meeting a few musicians was also great. I managed to shoot several rolls of film on the Hassselblad for portraits and other shots i wanted to remember on film and will post those eventually as well. Here are some of my Highlights and favorite photos from Day1. Musically the standouts were WHY?, Broken Social Scene, Nurses & Shabazz Palaces.

I'm heading off to the good old George WA Gorge for my fourth consecutive year of shooting the amazing NW festival. This time for the festival company itself: Live Nation. Its always hard work bouncing around stages, trying to stay hydrated and get all the epic stage moments while still enjoying the view/music and a couple beers when I can yet its always soooo satisfying in the end. Wanted to post a few photos from 2009 to get me excited yet again.

Had a few small prints up at KEXP's Photography Showcase during this years Hood To Hood West Seattle Day. It was fun to dig through all the in studios and live shows ive had the chance to shoot this last year. Ended up printing shots of Monsters Of Folk, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Avett Brothers, and Devendra Banhart. My friend Brittney Bush took this portrait of me re-creating Charlotte's portrait =P

Keep It Light: $5 Prop

Diamond District

I've been loving Washington DC based Diamond District's record for quite sometime now. Our own Larry Mizell Jr. has been bumpin it on Street Sounds constantly and for good reason. The young group made its first trip to the NW this weekend. I had the pleasure of shooting them @ KEXP during their in studio performance. I was flattered to hear they actually knew of my work because of ONEBELO's photos. They are definitly one of the freshest HipHop acts of recent times. Featuring Oddisee, YU, and XO. Oddisee has done production over the years for J Live, Talib Kweli, Freeway and Buckshot..to name a few. Come support my good friends Nick Bartoletti & Frank Correa at the 619 Building's 5th Floor tonight for first thursday. Portland Mercury/Seattle Stranger/Keep It Light

Had the oppurtunity to travel down south to my home away from home Portland, OR. Shooting our Seattle Stranger's sister paper s (The Portland Mercury) Spring Fashion Issue: Open Season Article.

This was a fun shoot although it definitely turned into more of a challenge/adventure than we had planned. After getting to our original scouted location up in the sketchy winding logging roads to find a freak May 1st snowstorm we had to find an all new location (Stylist wasnt digging the Snow Filled Spring Vibe) and start shooting much later than planned. Even with the mishaps/NW weather, I'm happy with what we pulled off. No the guns were not my idea..nor my favorite idea but it was fun to watch Jay (The Owner) shoot them in the woods.

Also feels really cool to see my good friend/Keep It Light Collective member Lauren Max getting this week's Seattle Stranger cover. Featuring a photo of none other than our fellow KIL member Ryan Furbush . Good things are happenin! cheers to more and more!

This is Chick. I've known him for awhile now. Many people have probably seen him roaming around Seattle. Hard to miss an over 6ft 5" tall dude with an eye patch and amazing vintage outfits. As intimidating as he looks hes, more of a gentle giant that loves comic books and movies.

Finally got a chance to take a portrait of him. I want to do something more planned out but I'm really happy with the outcome of a chance encounter where I had my camera.

Recently hit up the new Elliot Bay Books location in Capitol Hill. Splurged on a must have for my Photography Coffee Table Book collection. Had the pleasure of seeing this show in person at the Henry Art Gallery last year. I was happy to see it was put out as a book. Eirik Johnson's work is stunning and im so inspired to pursue more long-term projects as a photographer. Its cool to see work in the style of such amazing photographers as William Eggelston and Stephen Shore but the landscape/light itself being so vastly different. South/Eastcoast versus Eirik's purely Northwest Scenes.

Jenny, Strangers, Personal Projects...

I feel executing ideas you have brewing up in your head is extremely important as a photographer. I visited a friends house in Ballard a few months back and instantly pictured a portrait session in their front yard. I didn't have a person in mind but kept the idea on the back burner. I ended up meeting Jenny at her job. She wasn't a model but I instantly saw the potential (Shes Gorgeous..duh.haha). Approaching people about doing photos you don't know isn't always easy or wont always leave a successful outcome but sometimes it is and that makes it a risk I've become increasingly willing to take. Anyways, I couldn't be happier with the outcome of this idea. The film Frame & its hazy flair could be one my favorite images I've ever taken. Big thanks to Angel Dorr for doing makeup and Osiris for that blue top & of course Jenny for giving me the chance to shoot her.

Exit Through the Gift Shop

I checked out the Banksy Film this weekend and really enjoyed it! These little guys showed up on the Harvard Exit in conjunction with the film. Real? probably not but I enjoyed seeing them and figured I would at least take a photo to remember.

As far as the film, it was really cool to see some amazing old footage I never realized existed of many pieces being put up ive walked by in LA & NYC. (Banksy,Shepard Fairey,invader, Swoon, etc..) Ive always been a huge fan of Invader's work (Photo I took in Silverlake above) and was surprised that "Mr Brainwash" was his cousin and invader more or less started him on the path of documenting street art and eventually making his own (awful as it may be haha). Go see the movie!

Truly a dream come true shooting Charlotte Gainsbourg. So refreshing to meet such an incredible talent (Film/Music/Etc..) who is still so genuine, friendly, and a bit shy. I had a brief portrait opportunity after her in studio performance with KEXP. The top photo was my favorite of the 3 frames I shot. Urghh and did I mention that accent :P haha (sorry katie =) )
